Parsing and Interpretation in the Minimalist Paradigm
In this paper, we discuss how recent theoretical linguistic research focusing on the Minimalist Program (MP) (Cho95, Mar95, Zwa94) can be used to guide the parsing of a useful range of natural language sentences and the building of a logical representation in a principles-based manner. We discuss the components of the MP and give an example derivation. We then propose parsing algorithms that re...
متن کاملMinimalist Grammar Transition-Based Parsing
Current chart-based parsers of Minimalist Grammars exhibit prohibitively high polynomial complexity that makes them unusable in practice. This paper presents a transition-based parser for Minimalist Grammars that approximately searches through the space of possible derivations by means of beam search, and does so very efficiently: the worst case complexity of building one derivation is O(n) and...
متن کاملParsing in the Minimalist Program: On SOV Languages and Relativization
This paper examines computational issues in the processing of SOV languages in the probe-goal framework, a theory in the Minimalist Program (MP). A generative theory that seeks to minimize search, such as the probe-goal model, provides a strong linguistic basis for the investigation of efficient parsing architecture. For parsing, two main design challenges present themselves: (1) how to limit s...
متن کاملEvaluating Evaluation Metrics for Minimalist Parsing
In response to Kobele et al. (2012), we evaluate four ways of linking the processing difficulty of sentences to the behavior of the top-down parser for Minimalist grammars developed in Stabler (2012). We investigate the predictions these four metrics make for a number of relative clause constructions, and we conclude that at this point, none of them capture the full range of attested patterns.
متن کاملPhase-based Minimalist Parsing and Complexity in Non-local Dependencies
English. A cognitively plausible parsing algorithm should perform like the human parser in critical contexts. Here I propose an adaptation of Earley’s parsing algorithm, suitable for Phase-based Minimalist Grammars (PMG, Chesi 2012), that is able to predict complexity effects in performance. Focusing on self-paced reading experiments of object clefts sentences (Warren & Gibson 2005) I will asso...
